Accounts You Never Opened: Identity Theft, Credit Freezes, and Cleaning Up Your File

If accounts you never opened are on your credit report, you have the right to dispute every one of them for free, and a credit freeze will not get in the way of that cleanup. A freeze is free under federal law, blocks new-credit pulls at all three bureaus, never expires, and has zero effect on your score, while the bureaus must still investigate your disputes with the freeze in place. This guide covers how bad identity theft has gotten, what a freeze does and does not stop, how it differs from a lock, and how to protect your kids while you clean up your own file.

How common is identity theft right now?

More common than almost anyone realizes, and getting worse. The FTC logged more than 1.1 million identity theft reports in 2024, alongside roughly 2.6 million related fraud reports and 12.7 billion dollars in losses. Through just the first three quarters of 2025 there were 1,157,317 identity theft cases, already more than all of 2024, with credit card fraud up 54 percent year over year. If someone opened an account in your name, you did nothing wrong and you are far from alone.

The raw material for this fraud is already loose. The National Public Data breach in April 2024 exposed around 170 million records including Social Security numbers, AT&T lost data on 73 million customers the same year, and healthcare breaches keep coming. The safest assumption in 2026 is that your personal information is already out there, which shifts the question from how do I stay hidden to how do I make my credit file useless to a thief. That is exactly what a freeze does.

What does a credit freeze actually do?

A credit freeze blocks lenders from pulling your file for new credit, which stops most new-account fraud cold, because a thief cannot open a loan or card when no lender can check the file. Freezes have been free at all three bureaus by federal law since 2018. You place one at each bureau separately, it never expires, it has zero effect on your credit score, and it does not touch your existing accounts. You keep using your current cards exactly as before. For most people, freezing all three files is the single best free security move available.

What does a credit freeze not do?

A freeze is powerful, but it is not a force field, and knowing its limits keeps you from a false sense of safety. Here is what stays open even while your file is frozen.

  • It does not block your existing creditors, who can still see your file and keep reporting to it.
  • It does not stop most employment or tenant screening checks.
  • It does not stop soft pulls, including checking your own credit or account reviews by current lenders.
  • It does not stop prescreened credit offers. Opt out of those separately at optoutprescreen.com.
  • It does not undo fraud that already happened. Fraudulent accounts on your report still need disputes.

Is a credit lock the same thing as a freeze?

No, and the difference is legal, not technical. A credit lock has the same practical effect and lives in a convenient app, but it is a contractual product from the bureau, it is not governed by the federal freeze law, and some locks cost money. Only the freeze carries federal statutory rights. I tell my clients to take the free option with the law behind it every single time.

A fraud alert is a lighter tool worth knowing too. It lasts one year, or seven years for confirmed identity theft victims, and placing it at one bureau automatically propagates to all three. Lenders can still pull your file with an alert in place, but they must verify your identity first. It is a decent stopgap while your freeze paperwork is in motion, not a substitute for the freeze itself.

Can you dispute fraudulent accounts while your credit is frozen?

Yes, and this matters, because I hear people say they are waiting to freeze until the cleanup is done. Do not wait. A freeze does not pause disputes. The bureaus are required to investigate your disputes even while your file is frozen, so freeze first and dispute second. When you genuinely need new credit, thaw the file for that application. Online and phone thaws take effect within one hour, so a freeze does not lock you out of your own life.

The cleanup itself follows the same rights-based path as any dispute, and a fraudulent account is the definition of inaccurate information. Pull all three reports free at AnnualCreditReport.com, list every account and hard inquiry you did not authorize, and dispute each one in writing with every bureau reporting it. Only inaccurate, outdated, or unverifiable items can be removed, but an account you never opened checks that box completely. This is exactly the paperwork a done-for-you service like mine manages when a file has been hit hard, and every step of it is also free to do yourself.

Should you freeze your children and family in too?

Yes, and this is the part of the talk almost nobody gives families. More than 900,000 minors are reportedly hit by identity fraud every year, and a child's clean, unwatched file is a gift to a thief who can ride it for years before anyone checks. Freezing a minor's file is free, but there is no online option. You mail forms to each of the three bureaus with proof of your identity and proof of guardianship. The freeze stays in place until it is removed, and minors 16 and older can remove it themselves.

I grew up in a family where nobody talked about credit, and I had to learn all of this the hard way, so consider this the family talk I wish someone had given us. Freeze your file, freeze your kids, help your parents freeze theirs, and dispute everything on your report that is not yours. None of it costs a dollar, and none of it requires permission from anyone.

This guide is general information, not legal or financial advice. You have the right to dispute credit report errors yourself at no cost. Results are not typical and individual results vary.

Quick answers, straight.

Does a credit freeze hurt your credit score?

A credit freeze has zero effect on your credit score. It blocks new-credit pulls so thieves cannot open accounts in your name, but your existing accounts keep working and keep reporting exactly as before. Freezes have also been completely free at all three bureaus by federal law since 2018, so there is no cost and no score trade-off to placing one.

Can the bureaus investigate my disputes while my file is frozen?

The bureaus must investigate your disputes even while your file is frozen, so there is no reason to delay a freeze until your cleanup is finished. Freeze first, then dispute the fraudulent accounts in writing. When you need new credit later, online and phone thaws take effect within one hour, so the freeze will not slow down a legitimate application.

Is a credit lock as good as a credit freeze?

A credit lock is not the same as a freeze in the way that counts. Locks have the same practical effect and are app-based, but they are contractual products not governed by the federal freeze law, and some cost money. Only the freeze comes with federal statutory rights and a guaranteed price of free, which is why it is the better default for almost everyone.

How do I freeze my child's credit?

Freezing a child's credit requires mailing forms to each of the three bureaus with proof of your identity and proof of guardianship, because there is no online option for minors. The freeze is free, it stays in place until it is removed, and minors 16 and older can remove it themselves. With more than 900,000 minors reportedly hit by identity fraud each year, it is worth the postage.
